About the artist

Comox Valley artist Barb Hutson was born and raised in North Hollywood, California. She knew at a very young age that she was an artist. And why not? She was born into a creative family including a father who attended the Kansas City Art Institute, a musician brother and a mother and sisters who are also creative in their own ways.

Barb attended the famous Chouinard Art School (now CalArts) in Los Angeles during the 1960s, where she got her first formal education in fine art, including studies in drawing and painting.

She married and moved to Santa Barbara, where she studied sculpture at the Brooks Institute.

Barb and her family emigrated to Canada, settling in the Comox Valley town of Comox, where her two daughters were raised. She became a widow at a young age, and when her daughters were grown, she resumed her life’s passion – art.

Feeling the need to bring her skills up-to-date, and to learn new techniques, she enrolled in North Island College’s Fine Arts department. Barb pursued studies in sculpture, ceramics, drawing and painting. She was especially influenced by teachers Alan Burgess and Gordon Hutchens in ceramics, Doug Senft in three-dimensional design, and John Hooley in painting.

She established her own studio in the Comox Valley town of Courtenay, where she has been working for more than five years.

Barb works primarily in acrylics and in mixed media. Her works include paintings and sculptures.

She is active in her local arts community as a member of the Comox Valley Community Arts Council and the Comox Valley Art Gallery. In addition to her arts involvement, she takes an active roll in the life of her town as a director of the Comox Town Residents Society and a former director of Project Watershed.
